“The Striding Sojourner Truth”

By Sculptress Tina Allen

The Greater Lansing region has a rich presence of talented and extraordinary persons who exhibit a true commitment to the community and their profession. Therefore, since 1983 we have taken pride in honoring deserving individuals during our Founder's Day Awards Ceremony (Brunch) in the following categories:

Sojourner Truth is the Association’s National Matriarch

The Sojourner Truth Award is the highest award given by the NANBPWC, Inc.  It is presented by a local club to a woman who has given outstanding community service beyond the call of duty.  The life of the nominee should parallel the life of Sojourner Truth.  It was at the National Convention in 1948 that the award "Sojourner Truth" was named.  A person is eligible to receive the award only once by the Association.  Recognition of service rendered is important and an integral part of our Association.  Clubs are encouraged to present awards when deserved as a means of encouragement, support and public relations.

The award is a symbolic reminder of the endless effort which freedom demands.  In this modern era, that parallel may be found in looking at determination, wisdom, and societal contributions of the black woman selected.  Our Founders' Day Awards Brunch program is the only occasion used to present the award and the recipient MUST attend to personally accept.

Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass has been called the father of the civil rights movement. He rose through determination, brilliance, and eloquence to shape the American nation. He was an abolitionist, human rights and women's rights activist, orator, author, journalist, publisher, and social reformer. Committed to freedom, Douglass dedicated his life to achieving justice for all Americans, in particular African-Americans, women, and minority groups. He envisioned America as an inclusive nation strengthened by diversity and free of discrimination. The recipient should parallel the life of Frederick Douglass

Community Service

The recipient should be a person that has a strong commitment to provide their talents and service to better the community through volunteer service or participation or implementation of a program(s) for the welfare of children, youth, adults, seniors or special classes.

Business Excellence

The recipient should be a person that has been in business for five (5) years or more and has conducted business with integrity, good customer service and some form of community outreach.

Youth on the Move

Each year two young people who attend a Lansing area middle or high school are selected for the Youth on the Move Award.  The nomination shall express how the student excels in Leadership, Academics, or School Sports.  This award is intended to encourage all students who are striving to improve themselves and become responsible citizens in this community.  The Greater Lansing Area NBPW Club wants all of our young people to "Be the Best That They Can Be.”

The Founders’ Day Awards Brunch Souvenir Advertisement Journal is dedicated to posthumous heroes and sheroes who have impacted society and the event is proudly supported through sponsorships from local businesses.
